Time to throw down that gauntlet of bourgeois kids with expensive toys. Designers observe, deconstruct, catalog, and create, which sets us up to be powerful activists with powerful tools.

Steve Jobs, 1955-2011

The push notification from the AP app popped up on my iPhone as I was getting up from my desk. I wanted to exclaim the news, but everyone at the Microsoft office had their heads down, busy pushing pixels around that convoluted interface.

I closed my new MacBook Pro and wandered into the lobby, thinking about my first editorial design job for Humboldt’s Courier Chronicle when I was 16. The newspaper had just purchased a Mac 128K and I was the first to set type on it. Steve Jobs’ invention and influence took hold of my professional life and has not let go in 27 years. And now, I’m a bit surprised to feel the loss so personally.

Thank you Steve. My condolences go out to family and friends. Long live Apple. I can think of no other tools that have been so well developed for and adapted to their trade. ‘Tis a legacy for all designers to aspire.
